Sunsation: Making a Major League Splash in the West
Sunsation Powerboats of Algonac, Michigan recently delivered another 34CCX west of the Mississippi to a customer at Lake Powell, Arizona. The 254 square mile reservoir, straddling the Arizona-Utah border has long been popular territory for western built catamaran deck boats and open bowriders.
“I’m a bit of a boat nut,” says new owner, Tim Salmon, retired outfielder for the California Angels. “I’ve owned five different boats in the past seven years. I love it here at Lake Powell and spend a lot of time with my family and friends on the water. The lake is long and relatively narrow, where the water often gets rough with cross shore swells. Since I’m usually out cruising with a full boat of passengers, I was looking for a deep-vee design that could better navigate the big water and still provide an enjoyable ride for everyone onboard.”
Tim was introduced to Sunsation through Tres Martin’s Performance Boat School. “Tim is a very good driver,” says Tres, “and wanted a new boat that could handle rough water and still provide luxury and comfort for his family. I suggested that he look at some of the major performance brand center consoles built back east.”
After researching the top brands on-line, Sunsation piqued Tim’s interest. He contacted Joe Schaldenbrand at the factory and, few weeks later, he flew to Michigan for a test ride.
“The 34CCX hit all the points I was looking for”, says Tim. “It’s a quality-built boat with great style and impressive performance; and compared to the competitive brands, it’s the best value for the money. I was personally involved in various aspects of the build. I collaborated directly with Mitcher-T in the graphic and paint design of the boat and Joe would send me weekly picture updates of the build in progress. I have to say that the team at Sunsation went above and beyond anything I’ve experienced in the past.”
The 34CCX was delivered while Tim and his family were vacationing at Lake Powell on his 75’ Bravada houseboat. “My wife, Marci, and I were enjoying our first day relaxing on the houseboat with our kids and several close friends when I got word that the 34CCX was at the marina”, says Tim. “As soon as the boat was in the water, 20 of us boarded and we were off and running for the rest of the day. The boat is impressive, lots of power, great handling, plenty of room, and incredible fuel mileage for a full boat. We docked her next to the other performance boats who were there for the Spring Fun Run. I was amazed at the interest and compliments the Sunsation received from the other boaters”.
Tim Salmon played outfield and as designated hitter for the California Angels for 14 years. He retired at the end of the 2006 season as the Angel’s all-time leader in home runs (299), runs scored (983) and walks (965). He is second in the franchise’s history with 1016 RBIs, was named Rookie of the Year in 1993, World Series Champion in 2002 was inducted into Angel’s Hall of Fame.
